I bought a bale of hay. It was a bit of a wet day so I accepted the offer of one of the men working there to get one for me.
Got it home, opened it up, very musty & dusty & fairly shortly afterwards, my guinea pigs got mites. They've not been in touch with any other animal. Nor I! I couldn't understand it until the vet enlightened me.. she asked what hay i used. They will have got it from the hay! mites aren't like fleas. They burrow under the skin! So very expensive not to mention a miserable nightmare for the piggies.
Make quite sure you choose your own bale & be aware tht you might go home empty handed!
Well, following your reply, there is such a thing called hay mites and I'm not in the habit of complaining to make mischief....but I bought a bale of hay that was musty and dusty. Why on earth would I bother writing a review. Obviously, if you pick your own hay, you won't pick one that has been exposed and not aired, you'll make the effort to go to the top of the pile and pull down a nice dry bale that has aired.
There is such a thing as a hay mite. Vets of small pets know this. Anyone buying hay for forage for a large animal will never find out the hard way.
I wrote the review coming back from the vet after paying a fortune for the visit and the treatment and seeing the scabs where the poor little creature is suffering where the mites burrowed under her skin, none of the pets have been anywhere else and nor have I been anywhere near another animal with mites. It's your choice to believe.
As for reviews... Google hasn't been around for 40 years

Perfect place to go after a visit to the Peto gardens at Iford Manor. Make sure you have enough space in the car - you wont be able to leave here empty handed.

Brilliant selection of shrubs and perennials and some plants you don't see very often or at all. Well worth a look!

This has to be one of the best nurseries I’ve ever visited. A huge range of amazing quality plants offered in multiple sizes. I found plants here that grew in my childhood garden that I hadn’t seen anywhere else in some of the more generic garden centres (that tend to stick the same plants season in season out) I really loved this place and will be heading back here with as much boot space as possible next time I visit Bath - wonderful ❤️

Visited today 8/4/22 traveled far to visit this nursery as the reviews on the website were good. However the experience was very poor. The plants are in such a muddle it’s very difficult to find what you are looking for. We did ask 2 members of staff for help but it didn’t get us anywhere. When it came to paying I also expressed that I would of purchased more plants if we could have found them or had help. Not wheelchair friendly very difficult to access all areas hence why we needed help and didn’t get any. I will not be recommending this nursery

I had the most pleasant first visit to Downside Nurseries yesterday afternoon!
A lovely man helped me pick out a selection of plants to my requirements. I left with lots of new found knowledge on gardening and will absolutely be returning for more blooms and tips!
I'm looking forward to seeing how they grow.
A very happy customer!

I always look forward to my visits to this real nursery. In spring/early summer , the selection of bedding plants is excellent and the quality consistently superb. There are also well-grown perennials and a selection of choice shrub varieties available - all priced to give good value for plants of this quality. Highly recommended. You don't need to be an expert gardener as they are very happy to give pragmatic advice.
